Research Notes on Oxycontin Abuse
Oxycontin is a potent painkiller and widely used in clinical medicine. However, because of its mood-altering effects, OxyContin has become one of the most highly abused prescription drugs on the market. Oxycontin is easily abused, due to the large amount of its active ingredient, Oxycodone. Abusers of Oxycontin crush the tablet and ingest or snort it to feel powerful effects quickly, rather than the gradual pain relief it was designed to supply over a 12 hour period.1
Fast Facts:
- An alarming number of teenagers are abusing medications to get high, including Oxycontin.2
- Oxycontin is a brand name drug for oxycodone.3
- It is used to treat moderate to severe pain, in situations where an around-the-clock analgesic is needed.3
