Oxycodone is the active ingredient in OxyContin. When OxyContin is sold in generic form, patients will be given a prescription of oxycodone. Oxycodone is sold in both immediate release and extended release formulations; OxyContin is a form of extended-release oxycodone.1

- OxyContin is generally only used when long-term pain relief is needed.1
- Nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, and headache are common side effects associated with OxyContin use.2
