Ovulation and Conception

Research Notes on Ovulation and Conception

Conception is another term for fertilization. During ovulation, a mature egg is discharged from one of the ovaries and is ready to be fertilized. If a woman has had intercourse a few days before ovulation or at the time of the ovulation period, she is likely to become pregnant. Sperm cells can live within 24 to 72 hours and if the egg is fertilized by a sperm cell, it will form an embryo (called a zygote) that will normally grow into a fetus. If everything goes well, a baby will be born in nine months.
