Research Notes on Drug Overdose
A drug overdose happens when a person takes an unusually higher amount of a drug or medicine than what is normally used.1 A drug overdose can occur using over-the-counter or prescription medicines. Acetaminophen, antidepressants, and depressants are the most common medications that are involved in drug overdoses.2 Legal and illegal narcotics such as heroin, morphine, and codeine can also cause a drug overdose.3 Different drugs cause different signs of a drug overdose in people.

- Emergency care should be sought immediately if a drug overdose is suspected.
- Drug overdoses can cause major organ failure or death.1
- The poison control center should be contacted if the person who has overdosed is not exhibiting symptoms of an overdose.2
- Signs of an overdose include nausea, vomiting, sweating, and fatigue.1
