Research Notes on Overactive Bladder in Women
Overactive bladder (also called urinary incontinence) affects millions of women, causing a sudden urge to urinate or urinating involuntarily. Overactive bladder can cause a small leakage or a heavy loss of urine. Women are twice as likely to have overactive bladder than men. Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and the structure of the female urinary tract are the primary reasons for this difference.1

- Overactive bladder is more common in older women, but it is not an inevitable part of aging.1
- Overactive bladder can be caused by a number of reasons, including neurologic injury, birth defects, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and other physical problems.1
