Research Notes on Ovaries
Ovaries are the female equivalent of the male testes and come in pairs.1 The ovaries are oval and approximately 3 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm.1 The main function of the ovary is to produce and release ovum, or eggs, which are picked up by the fimbriated ends of the fallopian tubes.2
Fast Facts:
- At birth, the female ovaries contain approximately 1,000,000 follicles.2
- Eggs are released each month in response to hormones from the brain.3
- Estrogen and progesterone are produced within the ovaries.4
