Ovarian Cysts

This WisdomCard managed by: Chris Miller

Most ovarian cysts are of no consequence and fluctuate in size or resolve during the menstrual cycle. However, larger ovarian cysts may become very painful, especially if rupture of the cyst has occurred. One gynecologic emergency associated with ovarian cysts is called ovarian torsion, which occurs when an ovarian cyst causes the ovary to twist and prevents blood flow to the ovary.

Fast Facts:

  • --Ovarian cysts are caused by a follicular cyst that form when the follicle grows larger than normal.
  • --The most common way a cyst is diagnosed is through an ultrasound.
  • --The treatment of ovarian cysts varies from waiting and monitoring to surgical procedures.
