Research Notes on Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Symptoms of ovarian cancer may include abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling, or bloating, urinary urgency, and pelvic pain or discomfort. Other symptoms such as persistent indigestion, gas, or nausea, unexplained changes in bowel habits, loss of appetite, quickly feeling full, pain during intercourse, persistent lack of energy, low back pain, changes in menstruation, and clothes fitting tighter around the waist due to increased abdominal girth may also be experienced. Ovarian cancer symptoms can mimic those of other conditions such as digestive and bladder disorders. One key difference may be that symptoms of ovarian cancer typically are persistent and gradually worsen.1

Fast Facts:

  • In many cases, women have had symptoms of ovarian cancer for six to twelve months before being diagnosed.2
  • Talk to your doctor if you have any symptoms that are concerning or experience swelling, bloating, pressure, or pain in the abdomen or pelvic area that gradually gets worse or persists for a few weeks.1
  • Statistics show that 93% of women who are diagnosed with early stage ovarian cancer survive five or more years and many of those are cured.3
