Research Notes on Osteoporosis and Exercise
Exercise can be beneficial for people with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which there is a loss of calcium and tissue in the bones. Regular exercise can reduce the rate of bone loss and help to maintain remaining bone tissue.1
Fast Facts:
- High impact aerobics, sit-ups, and certain exercises that require sudden, forceful movement, twisting motions, sudden jolts, stops, and starts should be avoided by people with osteoporosis.1
- Weight-bearing, resistance, and flexibility exercises may be helpful for those who have osteoporosis.2
- If you have osteoporosis, consult your doctor before starting a new exercise program.3
