Research Notes on Osteoporosis Treatment and Prevention

There are several steps that can be helpful in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. These steps may include a nutritious diet, smoking cessation, limiting alcohol consumption, regular exercise, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, estrogen replacement or raloxifene treatment in postmenopausal women, and medications that decrease breakdown of bone.1 In many cases, if strong bone mass is built at an early age, it may be possible to prevent osteoporosis. When it does occur, treatment is possible and additional bone loss may be prevented, if osteoporosis is detected early.2

Fast Facts:

  • From birth to twenty-five years of age is the most important time for building bone mass to help prevent osteoporosis.2
  • In the United States, approximately 10 million people have osteoporosis.2
  • Osteoporosis is most common in postmenopausal women.1
