Osteogenesis imperfecta (also know as brittle bone disease) is a disease where the body is unable to create protein (collagen). Osteogenesis imperfecta sometimes called brittle bone disease, causes the body to have brittle bones and where the bones easily fracture.1Symptoms of OI are, hearing loss, bones that fracture easily, weak muscles, short stature, discolored or brittle teeth, loose joints and ligaments, tendency to bruise easily, skeletal deformities of limbs, chest, and skull, respiratory difficulties, excessive sweating, high-pitched voice, constipation, scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and blue sclera (blue color in the whites of the eyes).2

  • About 6 to 7 per 100,000 people are affected worldwide. Types I and IV are the most common form of OI which affects about 4 to 5 of 100,000 people.4
