Osteochondroma

Research Notes on Osteochondroma

Solitary osteochondromas -- also called osteocartilaginous exostoses -- are believed to be the most common benign (non-cancerous) bone tumors. Osteochondromas are thought to arise during skeletal growth when bone grows away from the growth plate instead of in line with it. Because the exact cause is unknown, doctors have not been able to find a way to prevent solitary osteochondromas.
