Research Notes on Osteoarthritis and Exercise

Exercise is often recommended for patients who suffer from osteoarthritis in order to help maintain joint health and manage the symptoms of the condition. Most physicians recommend exercises which are not considered "high impact" in order to avoid further joint damage. In addition, occupational therapy alongside exercise has been proven beneficial to osteoarthritis patients, especially those suffering from knee and hip osteoarthritis.1

Fast Facts:

  • Exercising in a pool is often beneficial to osteoarthritis patients as the water helps to cushion the shock on the joints.2
  • Yoga is an excellent method of exercise that is known to be easy on the joints.2
  • Walking, pilates, and tai chi are all very low-impact exercises that can provide benefits to the osteoarthritis patient.2
