Research Notes on Osteoarthritis and Aging

Aging can be a contributing factor in the development of osteoarthritis.1 As we age, our cartilage begins to deteriorate, which leads to a loss of cushion between the bones of the joints.2 Repetitive use of the worn joints leads to the symptoms of osteoarthritis.3 Approximately half of people over the age of 65 have osteoarthritis.3

Fast Facts:

  • Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis.2
  • The protein makeup of cartilage degenerates as people age.1
  • Women over the age of 55 are at a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis.2
