Research Notes on Osteoarthritis Risk Factors
Age, sex, joint injuries, weight, and other joint conditions are all risk factors which increase your likelihood of developing osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis rarely strikes individuals under the age of 40, and women are more susceptible to its development than men. Many osteoarthritis sufferers have, at some point, injured joints which are stricken by the disease. Carrying extra body weight can also stress the joints making them more susceptible to osteoarthritis.1
Fast Facts:
- Genetics may also play a role in the development of osteoarthritis, as some types of the disease appear to run in families.2
- Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout, and hemochromatosis patients also stand an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis.2
- A lowered intake of vitamin C and D has also been linked to a higher incidence of osteoarthritis of the knee.2
