Research Notes on Osteoarthritis Prevention

Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to prevent osteoarthritis, but you can take measures to protect your joints in order to avoid, delay the onset, or reduce the severity of osteoarthritis symptoms. Maintaining an ideal body weight to avoid obesity helps to keep excessive pressure and weight from being placed on joints. Exercises which focus on strengthening the muscles around susceptible joints can also reduce the likelihood of osteoarthritis development.1

Fast Facts:

  • Use caution when engaging in sports which may increase the likelihood of joint injuries.2
  • Eating a diet can reduce the likelihood of developing osteoarthritis.3
  • Good posture, rest after periods of heavy activity, and resting joints which feel pain after exercise can help decrease the common damage sustained by joints, thereby delaying the onset of osteoarthritis.1
