Research Notes on Osteoarthritis Medications
There are various medications available, both over-the-counter and prescription strength to treat the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Mild osteoarthritis symptoms are usually controlled by over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or NSAIDs. Moderate to severe osteoarthritis may need to be treated with prescription strength medications for the management of pain and inflammation.1

- Topical creams and lotions (such as capsaicin) can be used to treat joint pain.2
- Opioids may be used to relieve moderate to severe pain.3
- Researchers are currently investigating the use of the antibiotic doxycycline in the treatment of osteoarthritis.3
