Research Notes on Oseltamivir
Oseltamivir is a generic medication that is sometimes recommended to help stop the spread of influenza in adults and children over the age of one year.1 Oseltamivir can be used as a flu preventative, and it will shorten the duration of the illness if taken within two days of exposure to the influenza virus.2 Common side effects of oseltamivir use include: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and headache.2
Fast Facts:
- When used to prevent the flu, oseltamivir is taken every 24 hours for about ten days. Treating flu symptoms typically requires one dose every twelve hours for five days.3
- Oseltamivir is also useful in treating avian flu and swine flu (H1N1).3
- Oseltamivir is sold under the brand name Tamiflu.3
