Research Notes on Orthopnea
Orthopnea is a condition in which a person has difficulty breathing while lying in a prone position.1 Those who suffer from orthopnea often need to sleep in a propped up position in order to properly rest.1 While not all causes are serious, orthopnea is one symptom of heart failure.1
Fast Facts:
- Can cause a person to wake up suddenly in the night feeling short of breath.2
- The severity is often defined by the number of pillows a person needs in order to sleep comfortably.1
- Other potential causes include panic disorder, sleep apnea and COPD.2
