Research Notes on Orthopedic Medicine

Orthopedic medicine was practiced in ancient times, as prehistoric human remains show bones that had been broken in life, yet appeared to have been set! Splints made of bamboo have been found on Egyptian mummies. The earliest known use of crutches dates from 2830 B.C.E.1 Orthopedic medicine today can lengthen limbs, correct certain deformities, treat bone and soft tissue tumors, help bone cancers, and mend fractures. 2

Fast Facts:

  • The American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine is a non-profit organization to promote non-surgical orthopedic treatments.3
  • In the ninth century an unknown Arab physician made the first plaster-type cast from lime and egg whites.4
  • Orthopedics and sports medicine are very closely linked.5
