Optic Neuritis

Research Notes on Optic Neuritis

The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. When it becomes inflamed, as an autoimmune response to infection, the condition is called optic neuritis. Optic neuritis can cause temporary loss of vision which usually returns to normal in about 8 to 10 weeks. As the condition advances, the risk of permanent vision loss increases. However, with prompt and appropriate treatment, visual acuity can be regained.
