Research Notes on Opioids
Opioids are powerful painkilling drugs. They are usually used to treat severe pain or cancer pains. Opiods function by blocking the body's pain messages to the brain. Some people become dependent on this pain killer and may become addicted.

- Often prescribed because of their effective analgesic, or pain-relieving properties.
- Can be synthetic, or naturally derived from the poppy plant
- Some types of opioids can be used to relieve coughs and diarrhea
