Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine specializing in the anatomy, function and diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists diagnose eye conditions and diseases, and treat patients who have them by prescribing medications or performing surgical procedures. They also perform refractions, prescribe corrective lenses and perform other tests to help maintain good vision.

- Ophthalmologists often perform laser vision correction as well as treat cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment.
- According to standard guidelines, people who have diabetes or glaucoma are strongly advised to see an ophthalmologist at least once each year.
