Research Notes on Onset Insomnia
Onset insomnia, also called sleep-onset insomnia, is difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night.1 Usually people with onset insomnia will sleep well after they finally fall asleep.2 It is common among children and young adults.3 Onset insomnia is also seen in people with anxiety, restless legs syndrome, or delayed sleep phase syndrome.2 Treatments for insomnia vary depending on the cause and symptoms.4

- Onset insomnia often occurs when a person cannot mentally unwind, and continues to think and worry while trying to fall asleep.4
- Most people experience occasional bouts of insomnia.3
- Primary insomnia can also cause difficulty initially falling asleep.2
- Insomnia is a common side effect of drinking coffee or alcohol in the evening.5
