Research Notes on Occupational Therapy for Stroke
The goal of occupational therapy is to help disabled individuals become as independent as possible in their daily lives. Stroke survivors often need rehabilitation due to a portion of the brain being damaged. Occupational therapists (OT) can help these individuals learn new ways to manage their daily tasks (eating, dressing, bathing, etc), and help them to develop the skills necessary to return to work and community activities.1
Fast Facts:
- The OT may also recommend ways of eliminating hazards in the home or recommend devices and aids to help the stroke victim perform routine work and home tasks.1
- Therapy should begin as soon as possible.2
- Stroke survivors or their family members can find professional occupational therapists by contacting their local hospitals.
