Research Notes on Occupational Therapy for Autism
Many individuals with autism benefit from the effects of occupational therapy. Occupational therapists are trained to help individuals develop the physical and social skills needed to become more independent in their daily lives.1 Skills such as handwriting, dressing, bathing, and brushing teeth are commonly learned through occupational therapy.1
Fast Facts:
- Many occupational therapists who specialize in autism may also be experts in sensory integration - teaching clients how to process information appropriately through the senses.1
- Therapy is often presented to children as play activities.2
- Physicians may be able to recommend appropriate occupational therapists, but be certain to find one who specializes in autism.3
