Research Notes on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder also known as OCD, is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by obsessive, distressing, intrusive thoughts and related compulsions. Those with OCD may also have the urgent need to engage in certain rituals. These may include frequent handwashing, counting, and cleaning fanatically. Other disorders often accompany OCD. These may include depression, or anxiety.1

Fast Facts:

  • While there is no specific cause of OCD, family history and chemical imbalances in the brain are thought to contribute to OCD.2
  • Treatment may include behavioral therapy, medications, and psychosurgery.3
  • Those with OCD should avoid caffeine, alcohol, and stress as these can make the symptoms worse. Eating a healthy diet and exercise may also be helpful.4
