Research Notes on Obesity Virus

The obesity virus, also being referred to as infectobesity, is linking the human adenovirus-36 (AD-36) with increased body weight. AD-36 is the same virus that causes respiratory infections, eye infections, and sore throats. It attacks the fat tissues causing the fat cells to multiply therefore causing weight gain.1 The increasing weight gain is being called a "global epidemic of obesity" by the World Health Organization.2

Fast Facts:

  • Research has shown 30 percent of obese people were infected with the AD-36 virus compared to 11 percent of non-obese individuals.3
  • AD-36 caused obesity in chickens, mice, rats, and monkeys in research studies.4
  • Approximately 97 million adults in the United States are obese according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).5
  • Overeating, unhealthy food choices, genetics, medications, and lack of physical exercise are other contributing factors leading to obesity.5
  • Nikhil Dhurandhar, a Louisiana State University researcher coined the term infectobesity.6
