Speaking before the American Medical Association on Monday, June 15, 2009, President Barack Obama spoke about his proposal to create a program for taxpayer-funded health care coverage. He said a coalition of U.S. health groups would cut rising costs by $2 trillion over the next decade. 1 Early estimates from the Congressional Budget Office are that the proposed plan will cover an additional 16 million individuals at a cost of $1 trillion dollars. 2

  • Medicare is a federal program that provides hospital coverage and prescriptions to people who are aged 65 and over, or who meet other special criteria.4
