On October 24, 2009, President Obama declared the 2009 H1N1 swine flu a national emergency. This declaration will allow medical facilities to administer treatment when required, allowing the waiver of some requirements by Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal insurance programs. The swine flu has affected 46 of the 50 U.S. states, caused 20,000 or more hospitalizations, and is associated with more than 1,000 deaths.1
