Research Notes on Ophthalmic Migraine
Ophthalmic migraines are also known as eye migraines or ocular migraines. An ophthalmic migraine is a severe headache with visual disturbances. These types of migraines can produce visual disturbances even without a headache. The vision symptoms that accompany painless ophthalmic migraines can occur as a result of activity in the visual cortex of the brain.1
Fast Facts:
- Visual symptoms can include an enlarged blind spot called a scotoma, which is located in your central line of vision.1
- Symptoms may also include flickering lights called scintillations.1
- A shimmering zig-zag line called metamorphosia, which is located inside the blind spot, is another symptom.1
- The blind spot can grow and move across your line of vision.1
