Research Notes on OCD and Bipolar Disorder
Research has shown that bipolar disorder is also linked to OCD. A study done in 2004 found that 30% of obsessive-compulsive patients were given a diagnosis of bipolar II disorder. Another 53% of these patients had symptoms of hypomania.1
Fast Facts:
- Researchers found that 13 years of age was the average onset of bipolar symptoms for those with anxiety disorders, while for those without anxiety disorders it was 22.2
- People with bipolar disorder were found to be two times more likely to develop OCD than people with unipolar depression, and three times more likely to develop OCD than those with neither bipolar nor unipolar disorder.3
- Patients with a dual diagnosis of OCD and bipolar disorder typically experience greater feelings of distress over those with only one of the disorders.3
- You can take an OrganizedWisdom quiz on bipolar disorder to help shed light on this condition.
