Nutrition for Dogs

Research Notes on Nutrition for Dogs

In order for a dog to be healthy and strong they need proper nutrition. They need to consume water, protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals on a regular basis.1 The Association of American Feed Control Officials created nutrient profiles which include standards that commercial dog food must meet in order to be labeled "complete and balanced".2A dog's nutritional needs vary according to activity level, life stage and medical history.3

Fast Facts:

  • Water is the most important nutrient for a dog.4
  • Table scraps should not be more than 10% of a dog's diet.5
  • Fiber is not an essential nutrient, but it is found in every commercial diet for dogs.6
