Nutrition for Cats

Research Notes on Nutrition for Cats

Unlike dogs, cats are obligate (strict) carnivores. They have evolved purely as hunters. This means that they need meat as the core of their diet with very little, if any, plant material.

Fast Facts:

  • Cats have a high protein requirement throughout their lives.1
  • Cats can digest and utilize high levels of fat in their diets.2
  • Cats do not require carbohydrates in their diets.1
  • Most animal nutritionists and vets now recommend that cats be fed canned or raw food rather than dry food.3
