Research Notes on Nutrition for Bipolar Disorder
Patients with bipolar disorder may be able to improve their condition through nutrition. Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the symptoms of bipolar disorder.1 Also, nutritional supplements such as tyrosine or lecithin can improve the condition.2
Fast Facts:
- Antidepressants can sometimes cause weight gain, so bipolar patients should consume a diet that prevents additional weight gain.1
- Getting the proper nutrition for bipolar disorder should be used in conjunction with prescribed treatments.2
- Patients taking lithium should avoid consuming too much salt as it can prevent the drug from working properly.1
