Research Notes on Nortriptyline Interactions
Certain thyroid medications, MAOIs, and arrhythmia medications can have negative drug interactions with nortriptyline. Cimetidine has been shown to cause an increase the rate of absorption of nortriptyline which can lead to dangerous levels of the medication in the blood. It is very important that physicians and pharmacists are aware of all prescription, herbal, and over-the-counter medications patients may be taking when nortriptyline is prescribed.1

- The following antidepressants have been shown to negatively interact with nortriptyline: amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, maprotiline, protriptyline, and trimipramine.2
- Other medications that can negatively interact with nortriptyline include: atropine, belladonna, benztropine, clozapine, darifenacin, dicyclomine, haloperidol, ipratropium, tiotropium, tolterodine, trospium, sotalol, ibutilide, phenobarbital, secobarbital, chlorpropamide, isocarboxazid, rasagiline, chlorpromazine, perphenazine, dopamine, dobutamine, epinephrine, desvenlafaxine, fluoxetine, and phenelzine.2
- Nortriptyline is a generic medication that is sometimes sold under the brand name Pamelor.2
