Research Notes on Nonallergic Rhinitis
Nonallergic rhinitis has many different forms: Hormonal rhinitis, infectious rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, medication-induced rhinitis, gustatory rhinitis, and rhinitis medicamentosa. About half of allergy sufferers also have a non-allergic component to their symptoms.1 Nonallergic rhinitis occurs when the nose's blood vessels dilate and fill the nasal lining with blood.2
Fast Facts:
- Causes of nonallergic rhinitis include different foods and beverages, a viral infection (flu), environmental irritants, weather changes, and stress.3
- Diagnosis is based on symptoms at the time and ruling out other causes such as allergies.4
- Treatment involves avoiding triggers and using medications (such as antihistamine nasal sprays, saline nasal sprays, and corticosteroid nasal sprays for relief.5
