Niemann-Pick disease is an autosomal recessive disorder affecting lipid metabolism. Fatty substances called lipids collect in the cells of the spleen, liver, and brain. The majority of the infants affected with the acute infantile form of Niemann-Pick are of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.
