In 1881 James Monroe Buckley was the editor of an influential Methodist newspaper. While a friend of his was visiting New York City, the friend was struck by a runaway team of horses and died because there was no adequate hospital care.1 Mr. Buckley then called for the establishment of a hospital. "It is about time the Methodist Episcopal church erected a hospital somewhere in this world."1 From 1881 to the present day New York Methodist Hospital has served the people of New York.
