The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation has released the first guideline on recognizing and removing earwax buildup. Earwax (cerumenn) is a secretion that protects the ear from infections, dead skin, water, and hair. Removal of earwax with cotton buds may lead to eardrum perforation which in turn can cause bleeding and temporary hearing loss.
