Research Notes on New Clue to Early Autism Detection
Through the use of cartoons, researchers have determined that young children who suffer from autism are more attracted to those in which sound and motion are in sync. Researchers quietly studied the eye movements of toddlers to determine that those young children with autism spectrum disorders were more attracted to motions which coincided with sound over motions that did not coincide with any sounds. Normally developing children preferred forward moving objects, with or without sounds.1
Fast Facts:
- Researchers had previously noted that children with autism often looked in the direction of a speaker's mouth as opposed to eyes. This research may explain that finding, in that when speaking, the lips move in sync with the sound coming from the mouth.2
- About 90% of the children with autism were drawn to the audio-visual synchronized programs.2
- Researchers have concluded that by watching how toddlers react to and view events and people in their lives, it may be possible to make a diagnosis very early on in the life of the child, allowing for earlier treatment.
