Researchers report that newly discovered free radicals could cause lung damage or even lung cancer. It's been known for years that free radicals exist in the atmosphere and can damage cells, but it was believed that those caused by combustion -- such as car exhaust -- existed for less than a second and then disappear. These newly discovered "persistent free radicals" are remarkably similiar to the substances in tobacco smoke.
