Research Notes on Nervous Breakdown
A nervous breakdown is also called a mental breakdown. It a non-medical term which is commonly used to describe a sudden, acute attack of a mental illness such as depression or anxiety.1 Possible causes for nervous breakdowns include grief, stress, unemployment, divorce, pregnancy or any number of other stressors.1
Fast Facts:
- About one third of Americans have reported a feeling of being on the verge of a nervous breakdown.2
- Symptoms include extreme fatigue, anxiety, agitation and loss of appetite.3
- Psychiatrists may use the term "acute psychotic break" to describe this condition.3
