Research Notes on Neonatology

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents.1 Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Principal patients are newborn infants who are ill or require special medical care due to prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, congenital malformations (birth defects), sepsis, or birth asphyxias. Practitioners of neonatology are called neonatologists.2

Fast Facts:

  • Apgar score is a test designed to quickly evaluate a newborn's physical condition after delivery and to determine any immediate need for extra medical or emergency care.3
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), babies born before completing 37 weeks in the womb are defined as preterm or premature.4
  • A NICU uses state of the art medical equipment to monitor and manage neonatal conditions.4
