Research Notes on Neck Pain and Ice
Ice is sometimes recommended in the treatment of neck pain. In order to control the onset of sudden muscle tightness, ice can be applied for 15 to 20 minutes on the neck. For severe pain, ice should be moved along the neck area in a stroking fashion for five to seven minutes. Ice should be used with caution, though, as skin injury can occur.1
Fast Facts:
- Ice therapy can be used over painful muscles for the first 48 to 72 hours. After 72 hours, heat may be more effective.2
- Patients can use ice frozen in a paper cup, or bags of frozen vegetables for an ice pack.2
- It is important to remember to allow the skin to return to a normal temperature between icings and always check for skin damage or frostbite.2
