The first descriptions of narcolepsy were reported in Germany in 1877.1 Gélineau is widely recognized for giving narcolepsy its name and for identifying the disorder as a clinical condition.1 He characterized narcolepsy as a combination of muscle weakness and emotionally-based sleep attacks.1
