Research Notes on Naproxen and Pregnancy

While naproxen use during pregnancy has not been well studied in humans, animal studies have shown a potential for health issues in the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed naproxen as a category C medication. If you should become pregnant while undergoing treatment with naproxen, consult with your physician right away. He or she will weigh the benefits to your condition against any possible risks to your baby to determine whether you should continue to take the medication.1

Fast Facts:

  • The use of naproxen during the last trimester of pregnancy may possibly result in birth defects.2
  • Naproxen has been shown to be excreted in breast milk, so consult with your physician before using naproxen if you are breastfeeding.2
  • Naproxen is used to treat a variety of conditions and is available in both over-the-counter and prescription strengths.2
