Research Notes on Nails
Fingernails and toenails are made of a tough protein called keratin.1 They are a specialized form of skin. They protect the ends of the fingers and toes. Nails are subject to a lot of abuse. Minor nail problems usually heal as the nail grows out and require little treatment.2
Fast Facts:
- Nails grow at an average rate of 3 millimeters a month.1
- Fingernails require 3 to 6 months to regrow completely, and toenails require 12 to 18 months.1
- Nails provide clues to your overall health. Broken, discolored or misshapen nails can indicate nutritional deficiencies, infections or skin conditions.2
