Research Notes on Heart Attack

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when the blood flow to your heart is interrupted. This usually happens when a blood clot blocks the flow through a coronary artery. How often you exercise, how you deal with stress, what you eat, and your overall lifestyle all play a role in heart attack recovery and preventing first or subsequent heart attacks.1

Fast Facts

  • Cholesterol buildup in the blood vessels (known as plaque) narrows the arteries and may decrease blood flow to the heart causing the heart muscle to ache. This ache is called angina.2
  • Hypertension, smoking, diabetes and high cholesterol can raise your risk of a heart attack.3
  • An electrocardiogram (EKG) and blood tests are typically used to diagnose a heart attack.4
  • If you believe you are experiencing a heart attack, contact 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Chewing aspirin at the time of a heart attack has also been shown to reduce the risk of death and the degree of damage associated with the cardiac event.5
