Research Notes on Mumps in Children
Due to routine immunizations, children in America today are rarely diagnosed with mumps.1 The illness is caused by a virus and usually results in swelling of the salivary glands.1 Other symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, and a loss of appetite.2 Although rare, mumps can lead to an inflammation of the brain or an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.2 Because mumps is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not effective; however, non-aspirin pain relievers and fever reducers can be administered at home to make your child more comfortable.2
Fast Facts:
- The virus is spread through the air, and children are considered contagious for at least 12, and up to 24, days after exposure.3
- A vaccine for mumps is usually given together with a rubella and measles vaccine at 12-15 months of age, and again at 4-6 years of age.2
- Do not use aspirin containing products to treat your child's pain or fever as there is a risk of developing Reye syndrome.2
- If your child has mumps, contact your physician immediately if your child shows symptoms of seizures, extreme drowsiness, a stiff neck, severe headache or abdominal pain.2
